More than 200 TransCanada employees, family and friends participated in the recent Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes in Houston. The event was captured on video (see below) and drew more than 15,000 walkers. As a chief sponsor, TransCanada was out front and center leading the fight against the disease, and many employees dedicated the day to their friends and loved ones affected by the disease.
So far, the TransCanada team has raised more than $45,000 for JDRF and the company will match up to $15,000 of employees’ contributions.
According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 25.8 million people in the U.S., or 8.3 per cent of the population who have the disease. It also affects more than three million Canadians.
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S. It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke, and is the 7th leading cause of death.
