Since 2009, the Sept. 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance has become the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the United States.
Its goal is to keep alive the spirit of unity and compassion that arose in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, providing a positive, helpful way for citizens to remember and pay tribute to the victims.
This year TransCanada joined more than 40 million Americans and many others in 150 countries by volunteering in the local Houston community.
TransCanada employees and contractors were invited to volunteer at Star of Hope Transitional Living Center and Men’s Shelter, a community organization dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children.
“That strangers would take the time to help, touches the hearts of our clients in a way most of us can never imagine,” says Star of Hope volunteer liaison, Amber Wilmeth. “Such service in support of our mission is a tangible demonstration to our clients that they have worth and value as people; that others truly do care; and that better days are indeed ahead.”
Volunteers served over a total of 1,200 meals to men, women, and children.
“I was honoured to serve with our volunteers and support our commitment to integrity and responsibility in our community on behalf of TransCanada,” says Brandon Anderson, senior vice-president and general manager for U.S. Pipelines.
“Anytime we can give back—together—it strengthens our TransCanada community while supporting the areas where we operate. And there is no better day to give back than on 9/11.”
Month-long giving campaign
September is ‘Get Empowered’ month at TransCanada. Throughout September, employees and contractors will be giving back to the causes that matter to them.
They’ll wear hard hats to build a home for a family in need, help restore gardens at shelters and parks, shoot hoops to feed hungry children, pull and airplane to drive social change and remove fences to save wildlife.
Throughout the month, TransCanada matches employee and contractor giving by 200 per cent through the employee giving program, Empower.
