After months of planning, dedication and hard work, the world’s leading triathletes are descending upon Edmonton to compete for leadership in the 2014 TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final this weekend.
“It has been an amazing experience to watch this world-class event take shape — we owe a big thank you to the Board of Directors, 2014 Triathlon Edmonton for their hard work and expertise,” says Francois Poirier, President, Energy East Pipeline Project at TransCanada. “We are ready to welcome the world to Edmonton!”
The TransCanada World Triathlon Grand Final officially ends the International Triathlon Union’s (ITU) World Triathlon Series (WTS), which includes eight triathlon events worldwide — bringing together triathletes of all age groups at various levels of achievement, from children to seniors and amateurs to pros.
In 2014, ITU races hosted in Auckland, Cape Town, Yokohama, London, Chicago, Hamburg and Stockholm culminate in only a few days at the TransCanada World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton, with events running from August 26 to September 1. At the Elite men’s and women’s events on Saturday and Sunday, triathletes from around the world will compete to determine which elite champions will move on to the Olympic level.
“This will be a truly epic event that will showcase Edmonton and Alberta to the world. We are expecting to see 100,000 spectators, over 3,000 of the world’s best triathletes and over 45 million television viewers from 160 countries.”— Sheila O’Kelly, President and General Manager of 2014 Triathlon Edmonton
The 2014 Grand Final Schedule includes elite and paratriathlon races, standard and sprint distance age group races, as well as an aquathlon, U23, junior/mixed relay world championships and a corporate race for sponsors — offering athletes the chance to compete in the same venue as the world’s elite athletes.
The event will also include a TransCanada Kids Zone — complete with bouncy castles, face painting, crafts, etc., and a Sports Expo for those athletic enthusiasts.
For Canadians, the 2014 Grand Final brings a chance to cheer on the talented group of 23 Canadian athletes who will be competing in the elite, paratriathlon, under-23 and junior races. Those athletes not quite ready to join team Canada are taking advantage of the TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final Edmonton Corporate Race, which offers the employees of corporate sponsors the opportunity to compete in a triathlon show-down. Corporate racers can choose to race as a relay team, or individually, in either a sprint distance race or a try-a-tri distance race.
- Sprint Distance Race (relay or individual, 2.5 hours) — Swim: 750 metres. Bike: 20 kilometres. Run: five km.
- Try a Tri Distance Race (individual only, 1 hour) — Swim: 300 m. Bike: 10 km. Run: 2.5 km.
“The TransCanada Triathlon Team has been training hard over the past four months for the Corporate Race,” says Rick Coutts, triathlon enthusiast and Vice-President of Construction Quality & Project Management at TransCanada.
“We have about 30 to 40 employees racing and we can’t wait to get out on the course with other corporate sponsors. It’s going to be a lot of fun and it is a great way to encourage triathlon training as a way to stay active and healthy.”— Rick Coutts, Vice-President of Construction Quality & Project Management at TransCanada
At TransCanada, we believe athletics play an important role in empowering children, youth and adults to achieve their full potential in all aspects of life — especially when it comes to living healthy lifestyles and developing important leadership skills. Encouraging these two qualities helps build strong, vibrant communities.
Over the past decade, we have sponsored the Canada Winter Games, Special Olympics Alberta, 2012 Vancouver Winter Olympics and now the 2014 World Triathlon Grand Final because these events help celebrate excellence and foster a passion for competitive athletics in the community.
We’d like to officially welcome all national and international athletes to Edmonton and wish you the best of luck in the upcoming TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final Edmonton!
