At five-foot-five and 21 years old, Ellen Pennock doesn’t look like a fierce competitor, but that hasn’t stopped her from going head-to-head with some of the world’s best triathletes in this year’s World Triathlon Series (WTS). After proving that her sights are set on the podium by coming fourth at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup in Mooloolaba, Australia, Pennock came back home to Calgary for a few weeks of R&R and to visit our employees at TransCanada Tower.
As title sponsor of the 2014 World Triathlon Grand Final, TransCanada is offering employees a chance to compete in a corporate triathlon event during the WTS finals in Edmonton between August 26 and September 1. For six days this epic event will see 100,000 spectators arrive in Edmonton to watch 4,000 of the world’s best triathletes compete. Pennock is enthusiastic at the opportunity to make her family and province proud at this year’s world championship.
“It’s unbelievably important for corporate sponsors like TransCanada to support these events. This event will bring the world to Alberta and showcase everything that our beautiful province has to offer — it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to race at an elite level on home soil.”
– Ellen Pennock, Canadian triathlete
As a lead-up to the finals, followers of the WTS circuit will be treated to the fifth event in the eight-part series this weekend in Chicago. Here elite triathletes will swim 1,500 metres in the Monroe Harbour, then bike 40 km and run 10 km through downtown Chicago to inch their way closer to the TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final.
At TransCanada, we believe athletics play an important role in empowering children, youth and adults to achieve their full potential in all aspects of life — especially when it comes to living healthy lifestyles and developing important leadership skills. Encouraging these two qualities helps build strong, vibrant communities.
Over the past decade, TransCanada has sponsored the Canada Winter Games, Special Olympics Alberta and the 2012 Vancouver Winter Olympics. These events help celebrate excellence and foster a passion for competitive athletics in the community.
For now, we look forward to cheering for Pennock at the Grand Final in August and wish all the athletes competing in Chicago from June 27 to 29, 2014 the best of luck!
