With TransCanada CEO and President Russ Girling sharing duties as co-chair in 2012, the United Way of Calgary campaign raised an all-time record of $55.2 million, exceeding its goal of $54 million.
The money raised during the United Way campaign will be strategically invested throughout Calgary in United Way’s focus areas of children and youth, poverty and strong communities. The funds support social programs that make a lasting difference, in addition to United Way’s research, public policy advocacy and collaborative efforts to tackle systemic problems underlying local social issues.
“Our city’s future depends on our collective ability to address issues such as poverty,” Russ says. “By giving so generously in 2012, Calgarians have shown that they care and are ready to take on these challenges.”
In addition to the efforts of TransCanada’s Calgary employees, generous employees living and working in communities across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico also united their giving power to raise more than $2.6 million for 130 United Ways across North America. Their contributions, which included a company match of employee donations, saw an increase of more than $200,000 over last year.
Russ says, “We always say that our employees are the company’s most important asset. This is yet another example of the willingness of our employees across North America to get involved and build sustainable communities where they live and work.”
As a result of its successful fundraising, TransCanada was named one of four finalists for United Way of Calgary’s Leading the Way award, recognizing organizations and employees in Calgary who demonstrate outstanding support for the Leadership Giving Program (leaders are individuals who give $1,000 or more annually).
Shell Canada Limited was named the winner of the Leading the Way award this year at the United Way of Calgary’s Spirit of Gold awards on February 14.
Wendy Hanrahan, TransCanada’s executive vice president of corporate services and the executive sponsor of this year’s campaign, says, “It was an honour for TransCanada just to be nominated for the award. We are thrilled that our employees were recognized for their leadership and true spirit of giving.”
